In September 2018, the Francois Ferreira Academy was contacted by Correctional Services in Oudtshoorn, to provide training for their inmates. It was envisaged that training the inmates with basic skills would enable them to find employment upon their release.

Over 50 inmates attended interviews to assess their suitability, and 20 were chosen to participate on the “At Your Service” course. There was no funding available to cover the costs of the course, so the FFA used funds donated by the Eskom Foundation.

This course is designed to teach the basic skills to assist the unemployed to enter the job market, and the students attended class over 5 days in December 2018. The Mess facilities were used at Oudtshoorn Correctional Services to conduct the training.

On 7th March all the students received their certificates, where the ceremony was attended by Mayor Colan Sylvester, Corleen Barnard from Oudtshoorn Tourism, Mrs Booi Area Commissioner Correctional Services, and Liz Dekker from the Eskom Foundation, among other guests.

Further training is scheduled for April, which will be an Introduction to Entrepreneurship, to allow inmates to start their own business when they are released.
